The University of Louisville’s student-run newspaper, The Louisville Cardinal, is set to lose funding at the start of next school year, but a solution to save it has been proposed.According to The Cardinal, UofL is set to cut all financial support for the student paper starting in fall 2026. This is due to restructuring within the College of Arts & Sciences.The Cardinal editors say the paper is currently supported by “reappropriated scholarships from UofL’s Department of Communication.”However, the department has put together a proposal to fund it. UofL Department of Communication Chair Kandi Walker told The Cardinal a budget proposal has been drafted to instate a $25 student fee for all non-Pell Grant eligible students. This fee is estimated to bring in $600,000 each semester, according to The Cardinal.But the drafted proposal is facing a roadblock in getting approved. Walker told The Cardinal editors the Student Government Association must write a letter of support before the proposal can go before a vote.When presented the proposal in October, the SGA declined to sign a letter of support, according to The Cardinal.The Cardinal has faced financial hardships in the past, with small donations helping keep the paper afloat. Now, the paper is once again at risk of dying if it cannot find financial backing.Another meeting on the proposed fee is scheduled for Oct. 28.
