Columbiana County Court of Common Pleas Judge Megan Bickerton recently visited East Liverpool High School’s Career Tech Public Safety Services students. (Submitted photo)

EAST LIVERPOOL — East Liverpool High School’s Career Tech Public Safety Services students received a first-hand look at the judicial system Wednesday as Columbiana County Court of Common Pleas Judge Megan Bickerton visited the high school to speak with students about her career, the realities of the courtroom, and the powerful impact of public service.

Bickerton, who was elected to the Columbiana County Court of Common Pleas in 2019, shared her professional journey from studying law at Ohio Northern University to serving as an assistant prosecutor in both Medina and Columbiana counties before ascending to the bench. With nearly 12 years of prosecutorial experience and close to seven years as a judge, she offered valuable insight into the wide-ranging responsibilities of judicial leadership.

A central focus of Bickerton’s visit was the creation of the Columbiana County Drug Court, a program she helped establish to offer individuals a structured, accountable, and positive path toward recovery. She spoke about the inspiration behind the initiative and the remarkable success stories of people who have rebuilt their lives through the program’s support and expectations.

Bickerton also discussed the collaborative nature of high-profile cases, explaining how prosecutors, investigators, and law enforcement work together to ensure justice is served. She emphasized the critical role education plays in long-term life outcomes, noting that approximately 75% of the individuals who appear in her courtroom have never finished high school — a statistic that underscores the importance of prevention, engagement, and early intervention for youth.

In addition to her judicial duties, Bickerton also serves as an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech Community College, where she continues to mentor and guide those entering public service and criminal justice fields.

“We are grateful for Judge Bickerton’s time, openness, and willingness to inspire our students,” said Director of Communications Megan Hoffrichter Hernandez. “Her experiences show our students the real impact they can have when they choose careers dedicated to helping others and strengthening their community.”

The Career Tech Public Safety Services program at ELHS provides students with hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to careers in law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency response, and public safety leadership.

Instructor Chris Davis coordinated the visit and ensures students have meaningful opportunities to explore future careers and learn directly from leaders in the field.
