VANCOUVER Wash. (KPTV) – As classified employees at Evergreen Public Schools are still on strike in Vancouver, the district said on Sunday that the school year start date would be postponed, but meal service would begin Tuesday.
On Aug. 26, members of the Evergreen Chapter of Public School Employees of Washington SEIU Local 1948 (PSE) went on strike for the first time in the union’s history, after 92% of members voted in favor following failed contract negotiations with the district. According to PSE, the strike follows five months of bargaining.
Previously, the district announced it would delay the start of the 2025–26 school year by one week, with classes now scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 2.
On Sunday, the superintendent, Dr. Christine Moloney, said EPS would begin sending out daily messages around 4 p.m. starting Tuesday to update families about the status of school for the next day.

However, the district said that meal service for families will start this week. Beginning Tuesday, the EPS will have free breakfast and lunch available for students each school day during the strike.
Families will be able to pick up meals at three schools, which will have staggered pickup times, but families will need to pick up breakfast and lunch at the same time at these sites and times:
| School | Pickup Location | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Heritage High School 7825 NE 130th Avenue |
South side of the building, near the courtyard | 9:30 – 10:30 am |
| Mountain View High School 1500 SE Blairmont Drive |
Outside the main entrance | 10 – 11 am |
| Marrion Elementary School 10119 NE 14th Street |
Outside the main entrance | 10:30 – 11:30 am |
EPS said parents or guardians will be asked to fill out and sign a form at the pick-up site, stating how many eligible children they have in their home.
“We remain hopeful that we will be able to reach an agreement with the union and get students back in the classroom,” Dr. Moloney said.
