AUSTIN — Dr. Audrey Young, a member of the State Board of Education representing District 8, was nominated by Gov. Greg Abbott to represent Texas at the Education Commission of the States National Forum on Education Policy.
The conference took place July 9-11 in Salt Lake City.
The forum brings together policy makers, education leaders, and changemakers to discuss and explore innovative education policies. Young is chair of the Committee on Instruction for the Texas State Board of Education, and serves with a panel that includes Rep. Brad Buckley, Chair of the House Public Education Committee, and Commissioner of Education Mike Morath.
The panel discussion included the work of the SBOE, as charged by House Bill 1605, to create and institute an instructional materials suitability rubric and a quality rubric. The rubrics, which took nearly a year to craft and align, provides a tool to evaluate curriculum and ensure the content is suitable for the academic subject and grade level.
The rubric also includes an alignment to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, that materials are free from factual errors, and are accessible through a parent portal.
