Why Meghan Markle Is Often Out of the Loop with Pop Culture News

Meghan Markle is all about protecting her peace—which leaves her sometimes out of the loop on pop culture and current events.

Speaking at the TIME100 Summit in New York City on April 23, the Duchess of Sussex said that she has “made a very, very conscious effort to create boundaries for myself and for my mental health, for my well-being and certainly to role model that as well for my children,” referring to Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

“I’m conscious of not just raising a very strong and confident young woman, but also having a son,” she continued. “I think it’s just as paramount of importance for young men to be raised with a confidence and sense of self that is going to empower the women around them too.”

Citing inspiration from a Tina Fey quote—“If you ever start to feel good about yourself, they have this thing called the internet, and you can find a lot of people there who don’t like you”—Meghan said that she tries to “tune out whatever that noise is” and “really not give it any credence. That has become so much a part of my day-to-day life.” As for going on the internet and reading about herself? “I don’t do that,” she said.

The unintended side effect? That she is often “late on the boat,” she said.

“Things will get brought to my attention on a need-to-know basis outside of that,” she added. “That’s part of what I find to bring me peace. It also helps me have very, very strategic focus on the intention of the products, the creative, the producer work that we’re doing that I want to bring to the table.”

And apparently the work is working: “A confession for you today that I can comfortably say is that I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” Meghan said onstage with TIME CEO Jessica Sibley. Referring to Prince Harry—who was with her at the event—Meghan said, “To have a partner and a husband who is so supportive and have healthy kids who are so joyful—I never would have imagined at this point I would feel so happy and grateful, and I really do.”

Though her lack of scrolling may mean she’s a little out of the loop sometimes, there has been a positive benefit to her work life from being largely offline, she said. “It does give me a lot of space to focus, because I’m not in the same world that a lot of us find us in,” Meghan said.

As she launched her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, her lifestyle brand As Ever, and her new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder, basically in tandem with one another, Meghan said this chapter has been “incredibly busy and ambitious,” and as she watches it all “come to life,” she has been giving herself “the space and the grace to make mistakes, to know that you’re not going to get it right every day.”

As big of a deal as her business ventures are, her kids put everything in perspective; Meghan said that when it feels like something “is so, so big” it “somehow becomes microscopic in importance to what’s happening with your children. That’s certainly how I feel.”
