BVS bestows scholarship, merit awards

BATH — Bath Volunteers for Service (BVS), a volunteer organization focused on helping area children and adults, recently announced the recipients of this year’s grant and merit awards.
Each year, BVS awards a four-year scholarship to a Revere High School student who exemplifies academic excellence and community volunteerism. This year’s awardee was Eugene Staiger, a student leader at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in construction trades. Staiger works two part-time jobs and is active in swim and track and field. He also tutors students in Spanish and volunteers at the Haven of Rest. He plans to attend The University of Akron and major in civil engineering.
The following students were selected for merit awards this year:
• Saumya Mahajan, of Revere High School, the 2025 Marilyn Woodling Award winner, offers companionship to hospice patients, helps veterans and tutors Bhutanese students;
• John Anand, who is home schooled, the 2025 Ruth Ann Struglinski Award winner, created a Science Technology Engineering and Math program to inspire underprivileged and newly immigrated middle school students in Akron, taught Aerospace Connections in Education, visited nursing home patients and helped with a special needs ministry at church;
• Matt Lozovskiy, of Revere High School, provided services to the Ukrainian community helping refugees with housing, jobs, transportation and fundraisers. He is an active member of his church, including leading children’s programs, operating media equipment and maintaining facilities;
• Kavana Lokesh, of Revere High School, actively volunteered to support people in crisis by helping at the Red Cross, Cleveland Clinic and Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. She assisted with blood drives, organized supplies for veterans, coordinated CPR sessions for peers and assisted with high school theater productions;
• Camryn Bir, of Revere High School, volunteered with Safety Town and has worked closely with a young cancer survivor. Volunteer activities included Richfield community events, Revere High School Handmade Helpers Club, Revere Running Club, peer tutoring and mentoring female students in math; and
