LEWISBURG — Parents and children had a chance on Saturday to experience civic engagement and responsibility at the Lewisburg Children’s Museum.
The League of Women Voters of the Lewisburg Area hosted a voting booth for registration, information and voter education through fun, hands-on activities. The exhibit was held for six hours on Saturday at the museum, 814 Market St., Lewisburg.
“We’re trying to encourage young people at an early age and to show the importance of voting,” Linda Harris, the voter service chair of the League, said. “They can be part of the decision-making and realize they have a choice.”
The Museum’s Voting Booth exhibit opened in 2019. It was originally sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Lewisburg’s Mauch Millennial Project. The permanent exhibit is designed to introduce the importance of voting to children, using kid-friendly displays and activities
Children were able to cast their vote for a new exhibit. They can vote until Nov. 5 for their choice in new musical instruments, a new sensory wall or a new activity board. The league will pay for the new exhibit said league’s Forum Committee member Mary Beth Clark.
Children were also able to create their own campaign posters for the activity. The league members were also on hand to help residents register to vote, apply for a mail-in ballot and provide information about candidates.
“It’s important for our voices to be heard,” Jon Fertig, of Mifflinburg, said.
He brought his daughter Clara, 4, on Saturday and she had a chance to vote for the next exhibit.
“We think it’s awesome,” Fertig said.
Voter registration is due Monday.
