ROME, N.Y. — Rome Free Academy Principal Andrew Barton reassured parents and guardians about student safety following an unusual odor detected in a student bathroom.
According to a letter posted on the Rome Central School District’s website, the odor was reported around 9 a.m.
The school was evacuated, and the Rome Fire Department confirmed the building was safe after a thorough assessment.
Some students and staff experienced reactions to the odor.
School nurses and a nurse practitioner provided immediate care.
Experts from HAZMAT and Poison Control were consulted, and the school was deemed safe, according to Barton.
RFD conducted a second sweep in the afternoon, confirming the building’s safety.
The school remains in close contact with Rome Health to ensure ongoing support for students and staff, the letter from the principal concluded.
