UNM–Taos breaks ground on Cielo Centro: A new hub for learning, culture, and discovery

Taos, N.M. — Under the expansive skies of Northern New Mexico, UNM-Taos recently celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of the Cielo Centro amphitheater on Klauer Campus—the first step in creating a transformative space for education, culture, and community engagement.

Cielo Centro is envisioned as more than a collection of buildings. It will be a vibrant hub where art, science, and local heritage intersect, inspiring curiosity and opportunity for generations to come. The center will feature an amphitheater, observatory, classrooms, and outdoor learning spaces, all designed to connect students and the community to both the land and the stars.

“This project is about cultivating wonder and ensuring that young people in Northern New Mexico can see themselves not just looking at the stars, but working among them,” UNM-Taos Chancellor Mary Gutierrez told the audience.

Key contributions and partnerships

  • The King and Ogglesbee family donated a Dobsonian telescope, which will serve as the centerpiece of the Cielo Centro observatory.
  • Pland Collaborative, led by Sam Sterling and Samantha Swavely, designed an environment that reflects the spirit of Taos and its deep connection to land and sky.
  • Colin Nicholls provided visionary leadership, proving that big ideas can take root in small communities.
  • Local elected officials, Senator Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales and Representative Kristina Ortez, championed the project at the state level, advocating for education, workforce development, and rural innovation.
  • El Valle Astronomers and dark sky advocates partnered to ensure the preservation of Taos’ pristine night skies.

The groundbreaking ceremony highlighted the story of Jacob Torres, a native of Northern New Mexico who worked on NASA’s “Chiles in Space” project. His journey underscores the project’s mission: to create pathways for local students to pursue careers in science and technology.

Looking ahead

When complete, Cielo Centro will serve as a hub for teaching, research, and cultural exchange—a place where the community gathers to celebrate, learn, and dream together.

“As we turn the soil today, we also turn our gaze upward—to what’s possible when a community believes in its future,” said Gutierrez. “Cielo Centro will open doors for students and generations to come.”
