LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Officials at the University of Louisville announced a five month hiring freeze after concerns that President Donald Trump’s executive orders could impact their federal funding.
An immediate pause has been placed on all permanent and temporary full-time faculty and staff positions from now until July 15. This only excludes situations where verbal or written commitments have been made prior to Feb. 21.
They say they are doing this because of the volatility, uncertainty and potential impact of President Trump’s executive orders on UofL’s financial situation. One such cut could come to the univeristy’s partnership with the National Institutes of Health.
The NIH recently announced a 15% cap on all current and future grant contracts that could leave UofL without $20 million of research funding.
The university is also suspending departmental research incentives and asking professors to not ask for research funding in this way.
These are similar measures campuses across the country are seeing as Trump and Elon Musk attempt to slash federal funding, including millions in funding going to universities for research across the United States.
