The empty chair
The doors are sealed
the ring is broken
the chair is empty
Francis has been called to his place.
After his burial in simple style
the Conclave will gather
to elect his successor
“Habemus papam”
in affirmation
of acceptance.
The
visitors
The house was huddled and quiet
save for the two us watching a small screen
awaiting white smoke
and the name of Peter’s successor.
“Habemus papam”!
Just then, a sheep and her young lamb
appeared bleating at the patio window
seeking their shepherd, till, finding the strays,
they were returned to the grass pasture
of the flock, safe home again.
