LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Texas Education Agency has released its preliminary results from this year’s STAAR assessment.
Scores are showing moderate changes from previous years with students excelling in STEM courses while struggling in English and history. School districts across our region are following that same trend.
Region 17 is made up of South Plains school districts. TEA’s results for the area show test scores are going toward the extreme end of the spectrum with the biggest change from last year’s scores falling into either the ‘did not meet requirements’ or ‘masters’ categories. There was a marginal year-over-year increase in students who are now passing the STAAR test by their grade level.
KCBD examined test scores for Lubbock ISD, Lubbock-Cooper ISD and Frenship ISD. Of those districts, Lubbock-Cooper had more students pass each assessment at a higher level.
If a student falls into the ‘did not meet’ category they failed the assessment, the ‘approaches and above’ category means a student passed but at a lower grade level, ‘meets and above’ means a student passed at their current grade level, and ‘masters’ means a student excelled in the subject.

We spoke to Lubbock ISD officials at the beginning of the 2024-25 academic school year about their approach to the STAAR test.
Beth Bridges, the president of the LISD Board of Trustees, told us then the district is doing everything it can to prepare students.
“I feel like our educators here at Lubbock ISD are doing everything they can to make sure our students are learning,” Bridges said. “One test, one day is a measure, but it’s not the only thing our students are successful at so we are continuing to provide these resources to that we can equip them and make them feel comfortable when they take the test.”
Districts have received the complete report of their students’ assessments. TEA is expected to release its final accountability ratings and scaled performance outcomes for districts later this summer.
