HONOLULU (Island News) — Heading into May, a sizeable number of jobs remain available in many fields in Hawaii.
Aiming to provide a boost to the workforce, a Career Expo took place Wednesday at Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.
Over 400 positions are open at the Honolulu Police Dept. as they offer a $25,000 hiring incentive to recruits. Whether you’re a new grad or a seasoned worker, Hawaii’s Career Expo is paving the way for local job seekers to find their ideal roles.
One of the biggest areas of need is with the Honolulu Police Dept. HPD currently has over 400 vacancies.
“We have a $25,000 hiring incentive that’s available for our police recruits right now”, said Sgt. Walter Espiritu.
Meanwhile, Hawaii State Dept. of Education Recruiter Brian Sims told Island News, “We employ about 40,000 people in the state, we’re one of the largest employers – we probably have at least 1500 openings right now.”
Amanda Allison of Alewa Heights said, “It helps, being able to talk in person, mostly I came to this one to focus on the non state and city and county positions.”
Visitors including upcoming grads had a chance to meet with potential employers in a vast range of industries ranging from Health care, to Human resources and much more.
The Honolulu Fire Dept. also has a large need:
HFD Fire Inspector Tom Inouye stated, “One of the best things – we work ten days a month, hard to beat that, 24 hour shifts, you have twenty days off, and we actually make enough money, that we can raise a family.”
Federal workers past and present were in attendance pursuing work opportunities.
“I’m looking for a second job, something to go along with my federal employment because before I retire I want a second pension coming in”, said Anthony Bigetti.
Amanda Allison added, “I’m not exactly a federal worker, but my grant was federally funded, and my position was pulled back to California.”
The expo is slated to return this summer and it’s set for July 30th.
