ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCSC) – Summerville’s quest to win their first state championship since 1998 came up short on Friday with a 35-21 loss to Dutch Fork in the 5A-1 state championship at Dawson Stadium.
The loss was the first and only one for the Green Wave this season as they finish 12-1.
Summerville’s chances took a big hit late in the 1st quarter when starting quarterback Jaden Cummings suffered a knee injury. He had to be helped off the field and did not return. He was on crutches for the 2nd half.
Despite losing Cummings, the Green Wave were able to hold the lead in the 2nd quarter when Jayven Williams would rush for a 43 yard touchdown. That run put Summerville up 14-6 as Williams would rush for 133 yards on the day.
But Dutch Fork would tie things up on a touchdown pass to Boykin Bickley and the 2nd of three TD runs from Maurice Anderson that would give the Silver Foxes a 21-14 lead at the half.
Dutch Fork would up the lead to 28-14 in the 3rd on Bickley’s 2nd touchdown of the day. He’d have 7 catches for 149 yards.
Summerville would score one in the 3rd on a 77 yard pass from Cooper Kafina up to Jaiden Kelly-Murray. Murray had 7 catches for 152 yards and 2 scores.
But Anderson would seal things with just over 2 minutes to go in the game with a 38 yard TD run to give Dutch Fork the victory.
The Green Wave were playing in their 1st state title game since 2007.
