Stillwater Pow Wow celebrates Native culture in Redding
REDDING, Calif. – The Redding Rodeo Grounds were transformed into a vibrant celebration of Native American heritage over the weekend. The annual Stillwater Pow Wow brought together tribes from across Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
Thousands attended the event, which was hosted by the Redding Rancheria. The Rancheria is home to Pit River, Wintu, and Yana descendants and serves as a gathering place to honor ancestors and celebrate tradition.
Dancers of all ages showcased their talents in contests ranging from traditional to fancy and jingle dress, while drum groups performed songs passed down through generations.
“It’s wonderful to be here. Win-River, who puts it together, and the Potter family do a wonderful job to keep our traditions alive, our culture, our religion, to be here to dance and be like one big family. Like one big gathering, it’s a beautiful gathering,” said Leanne Snowbear Seldana, a vendor at the event.
The pow wow also featured craft vendors, traditional foods, and cultural demonstrations, offering the public a chance to learn and connect with Indigenous communities.
“Preserving the Indigenous culture, you know, the ways of our traditions and stuff like that. Just the food, the culture, the people, everything, watching them dance,” said Tyler, an attendee at the event.
The Stillwater Pow Wow serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, unity, and enduring spirit of Native people in Northern California. For 32 years, it has continued to shape the cultural landscape of Shasta County.
The event wrapped up on Sunday afternoon, but organizers emphasize that the work to preserve language, tradition, and community continues year-round.
