SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) – St. Michael’s School, located in South Sioux City, Nebraska, is expected to close at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
The catholic school has been a part of the South Sioux City community for over half a century, and currently provides education to students from preschool through eighth grade. A letter was sent out on Thursday, Dec. 4, announcing the closure.
“This decision was not made lightly. It comes after reviewing over ten years of our financial and educational data and carefully discussing possible scenarios for our current situation,” stated the letter sent out to families. “Over the past ten years, our parish has struggled to balance the cost of education with the available income from school tuition and parish collections. The increased cost that our parish and school have experienced in the last two years has placed a greater financial burden on our parish and we have reached a point where we no longer have the necessary resources to fund our school.”
KTIV obtained a letter sent to families about the closing announcement, and it states St. Michael’s School plans to work with families that wish to keep their children in Catholic education.
“St. Michael School in South Sioux City, Nebraska, has formed multiple generations of the Siouxland region and beyond, and our parish and school are truly grateful for the support we have received over many years from the Siouxland community,” stated the letter sent to families, which was signed by Fr. Matthew Niggemeyer, a pastor with St. Michael’s Parish and School.
According to the school’s website, the present school building held its groundbreaking in 1949, and by 1950, classes began.

“We are also profoundly grateful for the efforts that so many teachers and principals have made in order to offer a quality, Catholic education to the region and to make St. Michael’s a home to so many,” stated the letter.
In the letter, it states the closure was approved by Archbishop McGovern, Superintendent of Catholic Schools Vickie Kauffold, the St. Michael Parish Council, the St. Michael Finance Council, the St. Michael School Board, and the school’s administrator.
