In a geography subreddit, a user recently posed a question to the group: “Biggest city with the least amount of ‘culture’?”
The user left the definition of culture up to interpretation. Despite the vague parameters, some users had an unequivocal answer: Dallas.
“It’s soulless,” read one comment with over 1,700 upvotes.
“A concrete abyss that never ends,” said another.
Another user said: “Money is the culture … that’s it.”
One user suggested transplants, or those who moved into the area, were at the root of the problem.
The Dallas Morning News counted at least a hundred replies that suggested Dallas was devoid of culture. But that can hardly be an accurate or representative sample of how residents in this city of over 1.3 million actually feel.
Over the weekend, D Magazine shared the Reddit discourse on its Instagram. The outlet’s comment section appeared to contain a more balanced discussion between those critical of the city, namely for it being car-centric, and those touting the various local subcultures and abundant art spaces.
“Dallas is not a particularly interesting place to visit over a weekend. As someone who lives here, though, I’m 100% ok with that … the culture is here for those of us who stick around for more than a few days,” one user wrote.
