‘Sisterhood of the Survivors’ Stories of human trafficking survivors at the Players’ Ring Theatre
PORTSMOUTH – Based on the real stories of four Romanian human trafficking survivors, “Sisterhood of the Survivors” is set in a long-term recovery shelter and explores the three periods of each woman’s life: their childhood, their human trafficking experience, and their healing journey.
The monologue-style play written by Bianca Vranceanu and directed and read by Leslie Pasternack, showcases how trust and strength are built through telling their stories, and how through their shared experience they can build relationships with one another and attain a life of freedom, independence, and resilience.
This reading is part of the Ring-works New Play Development Program, and is free (donations welcome.) There will be one reading on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2:30 p.m. Registration at www.playersring.org is required.
Maine Women in the Arts 2024 Awards Show Recipients
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Maine Women in the Arts recently recognized local artists at their Awards Show which ran Oct. 11-13 at the Masonic Lodge in Kennebunkport. This show is a highlight of the show season for participating artists who enjoy supporting one another on their artistic journeys. This year six awards were given by judge Kate Higley. Additionally, a “People’s Choice Award” was selected by the public.

First prize was awarded to Gail Santos of South Berwick for her watercolor painting A Companion’s Gaze. Second prize recognized Wendy Gallart of Kennebunk for her pastel titled Aurora. Norma Johnsen of Peaks Island received third prize for her pastel Laundry.
The judge noted three honorable mentions: African Lion, a pastel by Sue Speers of Kennebunk, River’s Glow, a pastel by Ellen Pelletier of Kennebunk, and Sapphire Sky, an oil painting by Lisa Roderick of Wells.
Visitors to the show voted for the People’s Choice Award which went to Pam Edwards of Wells for her acrylic painting Marsh Magic.
The judge, Kate Higley, is a printmaker and painter whose work has been exhibited in fifteen national juried print exhibits since 2006. She is a member of the Boston Printmakers, The Barn Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine, The Monotype Guild of New England, The New Hampshire Art Association, Women’s Caucus for Art, and the North of Boston Print Collaborative. She has her home and studio in Eliot, Maine. Kate is a member of the fine arts faculty at Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth, NH where she has taught painting and printmaking. This month, Kate is a featured artist at The Art Center in Dover, NH with an exhibit of oils and prints.
Maine Women in the Arts is a statewide, non-profit organization, by and for individuals, both men and women, in the fine and performing arts. The objective is to promote and give exposure to Maine artists and their work in all media. They have three art shows a year: a summer show in July, the awards show in the fall, and the Prelude Show. ROLLINSFORD — Not one, but two musical events have been announced at Garrison Players Arts Center in November:
Linda Pouliot Sings Jazz, Blues, and American Favorites
Linda Pouliot, a Northern New Hampshire native has been singing ever since she can remember. She took the stage in 2006, when she moved to the beautiful Seacoast area, and her dream has taken her to Boston & Cambridge Mass.; Biddeford & Lewiston Maine; Newmarket & Portsmouth N.H., as well as other New England establishments and festivals. She began writing her own songs in 2007. Since then, she has been writing and recording original songs of jazz, blues, French jazz, cabaret, folk and country. Accompanied by three musicians: Charles Jennison – Piano & Horn, Bryan Killough – Guitar, and John Hunter – Bass. Music will include songs of Billie Holiday, Norah Jones, Gypsy Jazz Swing, Songs from the Great American Songbook, French songs by the Great Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour etc., and original songs from Linda’s French Heritage.
