Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra opens 27th Season with ‘Musical Portraits’

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra will open their 2024-2025 Main Stage season with “Musical Portraits” on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. at The Music Hall in Portsmouth.
The concert program features two musical portraits that reflect the stark contrasts of human experience. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93 is both a brutal musical depiction of the tyranny and oppression experienced under Stalin, and a portrait of the people who were overshadowed by him, even in death. Conversely, Copland’s Lincoln Portrait is the work of admiration and celebration of the great emancipator. Written for orchestra and narrator, the piece incorporates Lincoln’s own words and offers the listener a unique summary of our country’s aspirations. Special guest Monte Bohanan will narrate.
Adult tickets are $25-45, depending on seat selection, and $15 for students. Subscriptions for the full Main Stage season are also available for $130 and include three Main Stage performances at The Music Hall as well as a choice of one of two Family Holiday Pops! concerts.
