Save the Children has announced a five-year, $40 million climate finance initiative backed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to strengthen the education sectors in Cambodia, South Sudan, and Tonga.
The funding includes grants of $32 million from GCF and $8 million from GPE in support of the Building the Climate Resilience of Children and Communities through the Education Sector (BRACE) project. In partnership with the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the project aims to solidify climate resilience efforts in the education system by building safer and greener schools, embedding climate change in the school curriculum, and ensuring that climate information and early warning systems reach schools and children. Similar partnerships are planned for projects in South Sudan and Tonga.
“The BRACE project is a groundbreaking systemic step integration of climate resilience within education systems,” said GCF chief investment officer Henry Gonzalez. “We are happy to see the project will bridge the gap between climate action and education, ensuring that children in Cambodia, South Sudan, and Tonga understand climate risk and risk-based decision making. Education is the foundation of resilience.”
