“There is only one world heritage site in the entire state of Texas and it’s right here in San Antonio Texas,” San Antonio mayor Ron Nirenberg said.
The center tells the story of our city’s five missions including the Alamo. Interweaving cultures that can be found in the city.
“It is our hope that this center will help foster a deeper appreciation for the diverse experiences that have shaped our community,” Nirenberg said.
located on Roosevelt Avenue on the city’s southside the center has indoor space and more than 10,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor exhibit and meeting space. There is also parking, walking trails, a drum circle and a soccer field.
“I’m reminded of the inner strength and resilience of the people of San Antonio and the blend of cultures that has created a community that continues to flourish and remain connected to this land and to its missions,” Nierenberg said.
Colleen Swain, Director of the World Heritage Office says the center features exhibits educating guests about the missions and those who worked in them. It will also tell the stories of those who encountered the missionaries and modern San Antonio.
“So we hope to keep the exhibits dynamic so people always have a reason to come back,” Swain said.
The project was funded by multiple sources including different bonds and a tax increment reinvestment zone.
