AITKIN — In recognition of World Stroke Day on Oct. 29, Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin is encouraging the community to take a moment to learn the signs of stroke, understand the risk factors, and know what to do in an emergency
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, but fast action can make all the difference. Knowing the signs and calling 911 immediately can help patients get the care they need when every second counts.
Recognize the warning signs
A simple way to remember the signs is BE FAST:
- Balance – Sudden loss of balance or coordination,
- Eyes – Sudden blurred or double vision,
- Face – Drooping on one side of the face,
- Arms – Weakness or numbness in one arm,
- Speech – Slurred speech or difficulty speaking,
- Time – Call 911 right away and note the time of onset.
If someone experiences any of these symptoms call 911 immediately. Stroke is a medical emergency, and quick treatment can protect brain function and improve recovery.
Understand the risk factors
Certain factors can increase the risk of stroke, including:
- High blood pressure,
- Diabetes,
- High cholesterol,
- Smoking,
- Obesity or lack of physical activity,
- Heart disease or irregular heart rhythms,
- Family history of stroke.
Many of these risk factors can be managed with regular checkups, healthy lifestyle choices and support from a health care team.
