BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – With the future of federal funding uncertain, the University of Vermont has announced a hiring freeze.
In a memo shared Tuesday, school officials say for the next 60 days they will not be hiring long-term faculty or postdoctoral positions.
It comes as colleges across the country face an onslaught of challenges posed by the Trump administration, from cuts to federal research funding to ending diversity programs and hiring. UVM leans heavily on funding from federal resources like the NIH and USDA.
“We think it’s better to not be hiring people when we don’t know if we can continue to afford to pay them,” said UVM’s Richard Cate.
Officials say staff jobs posted before January 1st will be closed by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and any posted on or after January 1st will be removed. Positions deemed critical will still be considered and job offers already made will be honored.
The New York Times reports dozens of schools including North Carolina State University, Stanford, and The University of Louisville in Kentucky have implemented similar hiring freezes.
