DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – The public saw, heard, and tasted Ojibwe culture during a cultural celebration Saturday.
The St. Louis County Historical Society hosted a Native American Heritage Day event at The Depot.
Visitors learned about the history of treaties in the region and viewed the Lake Superior Ojibwe Gallery, which will soon expand to the main floor of the depot.
They also heard a hand drummer performance and enjoyed frybread tacos.
Organizers of the event said the most important part was sharing native culture and learning how their history connects with others.
“It’s a shared history,” said St. Louis County Historical Society American Indian Advisory Member Michele Hakala-Beeksma. “As different cultures and different people have come, that evolving relationship is important and it’s fascinating.”
The event also had kids’ activities, including coloring and a story time.
