Sony welcomed October 2025 with another PS4 system software update, coinciding with a new PS5 firmware update. Firmware patch 13.02 also happens to be identical to what the PS5 received earlier today.
What does PS4 system software update for October 2025 do?
“We’ve made some security fixes to the system software,” Sony wrote. This is the same patch note that came with today’s PS5 system update.
In layman’s terms, Sony’s plugging vulnerabilities, and specifically in PS4’s case, it’s cracking down on jailbreaking. While the PS5 has yet to be hacked as extensively as its predecessor, the PS4 jailbreak scene is pretty advanced and made significant progress during the console’s life cycle. However, Sony continues to combat modders by rolling out security fixes that make it difficult to continue hacking the PS4.
PS4 also received a small firmware update in September, and although we suspect that it tackled exploits, Sony made no mention of any security fixes. The company claimed that the system software update targeted messaging and UI improvements.
While we don’t know what those improvements are, PS4 Pro players claimed that the console’s UI became smoother following last month’s update. We spotted quite a few comments with similar observations, so we’re not sure if we can chalk that up to the Placebo Effect or not.
