When the home care agency where Kacee Green had worked for a decade closed its doors,
she faced a pivotal moment.

As a single mother raising three children, Green needed a path forward: one that would
allow her to build on her experience and secure her future. She found that path at
Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City.

Green now serves as a medical billing and coding specialist at Principle Choice Home
Healthcare, a role she began in late 2024. Her responsibilities include verifying
insurance, obtaining authorizations and ensuring proper documentation for home health
services.

Headshot of a smiling Kacee Green“I am a medical billing and coding specialist, and I majored in healthcare administration
with a billing track,” Green said. “The billing track helped me prepare for this because
[it] prepped me to take my certification tests.”

Green’s journey to OSU-OKC began with an initial interest in addiction counseling
through the Center for Social Innovation. However, the in-person requirements didn’t
align with her family’s needs.

“I did some diving into OSU-OKC, what other programs were available,” she said. “The
healthcare administration program was available, and there was a billing and coding
track. I thought, ‘I’m already doing this. Why don’t we just see what happens from
here?’”

She was able to transfer previous college credits and quickly begin the degree path.
Green completed the healthcare administration track in July 2024, passed her professional
billing certification shortly after, and earned her coding licensure this year.

A key part of her success, Green said, was the mentorship and guidance she received
from faculty, particularly Dr. Cindy Akkerman.

“She is amazing and has really become a mentor to me,” Green said. “It just gave me
the confidence to continue through.”

Green emphasized the flexibility of OSU-OKC’s online structure, which allowed her
to balance work, parenting and even recover from hand surgery while completing coursework.

“It is doable,” she said. “I was working a full-time job and I was able to complete
all of my courses. I passed with really, really good grades.”

Her work at PCH allows her to support both patients and providers.

“I get to interact with the patients and help them figure out if this insurance isn’t
going to cover this, how we can help you get the care that you need,” she said. “I’m
also helping the provider, the physician, the agency, whoever is providing that care,
get the reimbursement for the services that they’re rendering.”

Akkerman, department head for Healthcare Management, praised Green’s determination.

“Kacee Green is a great example of how OSU-OKC can help you get certified, earn a
degree and excel in the workplace,” Akkerman said. “There is no stopping her. I look
forward to seeing what she completes.”

About OSU-OKC’s Healthcare Management Program

OSU-OKC’s Healthcare Management program offers flexible online tracks designed to
prepare students for careers in medical billing, coding, and healthcare management.
The billing and coding track equips students with the knowledge and skills needed
to pass industry-recognized certification exams, such as those offered by AAPC. With
supportive faculty, transfer-friendly credit policies, and a structure that accommodates
working adults, the program helps students like Green gain the credentials employers
seek and the confidence to succeed.
