Olivia Munn is opening up about her mom, Kim’s, health, and that she has breast cancer, two years after Munn’s diagnosis.
The Your Friends & Neighbors actress took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the news. “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. You may know that when I talk about my own battle with cancer I bring up the Lifetime Risk Assessment test that saved my life,” she captioned the carousel of photos, including one of her mom in the hospital next to her husband and comedian John Mulaney. “I never would’ve predicted it would save my mom’s life as well.”
Notes in the carousel posts read in part: “After my own breast cancer diagnosis in 2023, I urged my mother and sister to take the Breast Cancer Lifetime Risk Assessment test. My mother scored 26.2 percent. Her yearly mammogram had just come out clear but because of that high score I insisted she get an MRI,” Munn wrote. “Shortly after that MRI, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 Her2 breast cancer. She has since completed 12 rounds of chemo and will continue monthly Herceptin transfusions until this fall.”
In 2023, Munn was diagnosed with Luminal B cancer in both breasts. She had a biopsy and then, 30 days later, underwent a double mastectomy. The Newsroom actress also explained that she and her mom were there for each other for both of their double mastectomy surgeries. “There’s something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking,” she wrote.
Munn also encouraged women to take the lifetime risk test. “All of these things matter, you can’t leave one off,” she wrote. “My mom wanted me to tell you that she hopes by sharing her story it will help save someone’s life.”
