NEW YORK (WBNG) — The New York State Department of Health issued a travel advisory due to rising measles cases.
According to the Department of Health, getting the measles vaccine is the best protection against the disease.
Officials said travelers should be fully vaccinated at least two weeks before leaving. After travel, they should be on the lookout for symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and others.
“When you look at one of the real hotspots in North America of measles, it’s Ontario, Canada. Over 500 cases right now in Ontario, Canada, and since Ontario is literally a car ride away to many people in western New York in particular, we want to make sure people knew there’s travel associated risk right now,” said New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Jim McDonald.
If you get exposed, quarantine for at least 21 days. Those who test positive should isolate until 4 days after a rash appears.
