Notre Dame Law School has announced a partnership with Harvey, the developer of an industry-leading generative artificial intelligence platform designed specifically for the legal profession that has been adopted by 70% of AmLaw 10 firms and nearly 50% of AmLaw 100 firms. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in integrating AI into legal education at Notre Dame Law School, equipping the next generation of Notre Dame Lawyers with essential AI resources and expertise for their future legal practice.
A key motivation behind this partnership is to prepare ND Law students for a future where AI technologies are increasingly utilized by law firms. The skills gained through this collaboration will provide Notre Dame graduates a competitive advantage in their careers from day one.
“Artificial Intelligence is here. It is increasingly more sophisticated and will rapidly become more integral to our work. Law firms and organizations will expect expertise in the use of AI, so it is incumbent upon us to prepare our students to utilize it effectively and ethically,” said G. Marcus Cole, the Joseph A. Matson Dean and Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School. “We are excited to be a pioneer in legal education, partnering with Harvey to bring this critically important education to our students, preparing them to work for the common good.”
Notre Dame Law librarians received access to, and training on the Harvey platform during the Fall 2024 semester. In the Spring 2025 semester, Harvey extended access to students enrolled in two Advanced Legal Research courses: Law Practice Technology with Prof. Susan Azyndar and Online Legal Research with Prof. Thomas Mills. This tailored training has deepened students’ understanding of legal research methods in an AI-enhanced environment.
“It is the responsibility of law schools, and more specifically faculty members who teach legal research, to prepare students for the practice of law with AI. Our collaboration with Harvey AI is the first step in exposing students to AI in legal practice,” said Thomas Mills, associate dean and director of the Kresge Law Library.
Susan Azyndar, senior associate director of the Kresge Law Library, added, “Students in my class enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity to work with a new tool with specific use cases for transactional law, noting Harvey’s “structured and thorough” results and its “flexible, conversational” interface. They observed that Harvey efficiently distilled complex information, surfaced key points, and supported deep, thoughtful analysis.”
With over half of Notre Dame Law graduates annually accepting job offers from leading firms, this collaboration underscores the importance of preparing students for the evolving legal market and highlights the role AI plays in it, positioning Notre Dame graduates for success in a competitive, technology-focused landscape. By fostering awareness of current AI applications in law firms and anticipated future trends, this partnership aims to cultivate the next generation of legal professionals.
John Haddock, Harvey’s Chief Business Officer, said, “Law schools like Notre Dame fundamentally shape the future of the legal industry. We are thrilled to join the University in investing in their students as they remain at the forefront of legal innovation.”
The partnership was first unveiled during a panel discussion last fall moderated by Dean G. Marcus Cole.
