Northwest soccer honors Emma Jensen for career scoring record

SENATOBIA, Miss. — Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s soccer celebrated a monumental achievement Wednesday, Oct. 8, honoring sophomore Emma Jensen for becoming the program’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Jensen, a German midfielder, was recognized at the Ranger Soccer Complex in a ceremony where her teammates signed a ball and a jersey, commemorating the work that placed her alone atop the Northwest scoring ledger.

The record-breaking moment arrived five days earlier during a critical match against Pearl River. With the Rangers trailing by a goal, Jensen stepped up for a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Her strike to the top-left corner not only equalized the score but also marked her 40th career goal, surpassing the previous mark of 39 set by Jessica Yelvington in 2005.

Jensen’s milestone also extends to career points, a record she broke against Itawamba Community College. Her current tally stands at 93 career points, eclipsing Yelvington’s previous high.

Team Focus Over Individual Legacy

Despite the individual accolades, Jensen emphasized that the immediate impact of her record-breaking goal—bringing the team level—was more important than personal legacy.

“It’s amazing to have this individual record, but the most important thing is about the team winning a state championship and a national championship,” Jensen said. “It’s not what I came here for.”

Head Coach James Beattie praised Jensen’s character as much as her athletic ability.

“I’m obviously so proud. For me, it’s more the person than the player,” Beattie said. “Everyone knows she’s an insane player, but as a person, she’s next level as well. In my coaching and playing career, you’ve got people that break records or are good athletes but are not good people. She’s outstanding.”

Beattie highlighted Jensen’s versatility, noting, “Left foot, right foot, header, small distance, big distance, there’s virtually nothing that she can’t do when it comes to soccer.” He also credited her ability to elevate her teammates.

Jensen was quick to acknowledge the role of the program in her success. “You have to have luck and be on the right team and have the right coach. Having the good stuff around you. It’s not just the player that can affect that,” she stated.

Focusing on the Championship Goal

With the record now set, Jensen and the Rangers are focused on defending their national championship and extending their program-record 33-game winning streak. The team faces a challenging stretch with three top-10 opponents in their next three matches.

Jensen’s drive, as a true team captain, comes from her love of the game.

“I just am having fun playing soccer,” she said. “If you just play every day, I don’t think you get records like that. You have to really love the game and be able to do more for it.”

Coach Beattie is hopeful that Jensen’s continuous performance will raise the bar impossibly high for future players. “Hopefully she continues to score goals and make assists and make it impossible to catch and then if anyone catches it, then they must be a hell of a player,” he said.

Emma Jensen makes contact with a shot that put her alone in the record books for career goals with number 40 in her time with the Rangers. (Maylee Willhite/nwccrangers.com)
