Linebacker Khalil Mack wrapped up his 11th NFL season on Saturday after the Los Angeles Chargers suffered a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans in the AFC’s wild card round.
According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, Mack is unsure about his career’s future and will discuss with his family whether to return to the league or retire.
Mack signed a one-year, $19.2 million restructured contract in March to lower his 2024 cap hit by $13 million, per Spotrac . With that deal done, the 33-year-old pass-rusher is set to be a free agent this offseason. As part of the restructuring, Mack also carries an $8.8 million dead cap with the Chargers in 2025, regardless of whether he returns to the team.
The 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Mack is a three-time first-team All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowler. He was named to the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team. Mack, who played linebacker with the Buffalo Bulls in college, was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders.
Mack is the seventh-rated outside linebacker in Pro Football Reference’s Hall of Fame Monitor. This metric is “designed to estimate a player’s chances of making the Pro Football Hall of Fame using AV, Pro Bowls, All-Pros, championships and various stat milestones.”

This placement ranks Mack as the highest-rated OLB not yet inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Players are not eligible for entry until five years after their retirement.
For his career, Mack has 630 combined tackles, 107.5 sacks (32nd all-time) and 142 TFLs (13th). He has played for the Raiders (2014-2017), Chicago Bears (2018-2021) and Chargers (2022-present).
