Shonda came into her intake appointment nervous because she was unsure of what or where she wanted to go with her career. She was worried as her family was having difficulty meeting basic needs and the cost of living was continuously rising. Shonda wanted to set a good example for her children and prove that even while working full-time, she can still achieve her educational goals. Alongside her Career Advisor, Shonda researched some of the training providers and was sent home with an informational packet. Shonda called with questions and concerns, and by the third day of having her packet, she had visited and chosen a school. Shonda followed every step required and checked in to ensure she was ready to begin her training at school.
During this time, Shonda was working as a transportation driver for a company which took up most of her time. Her job helped meet the basic needs for her and her family. While she was in school, she was requesting transportation assistance and upon that request, she was awarded gas cards and did everything to meet the requirements to obtain more. She went to training every day while working more than 40 hours a week and supporting 10 children.
Shonda graduated on April 28, 2024, and the following day she received her CDL. She is currently working as a CDL driver for Parking Management Company LLC (formerly American Valet Group). Shonda has continued to follow up with her Career Advisor and wrote this note:
“My name is Shonda. I am a wife and mother of nine boys and one girl ranging from four to 23 years of age. I have always wanted the best for my family and truly wanted to make more money, and not only that, but do something I love. My husband told me about ARIZONA@WORK and programs where they help get you certified in multiple careers. I immediately went down to their office, enrolled in the orientation, and met my Career Advisor. She was so sweet and made everything super easy and it happened quickly. We got all the paperwork; I did my research, and before I knew it, I was in school at Southwest Trucking. It took me eight weeks because I worked during the week so I could only take classes on weekends. It has truly changed my life. I graduated on April 29, 2024, went down to DMV and received my CDL Class A. I went from making $17 to $23 an hour. It’s only going to get better from here. I have a job I love and am able to do more things for and with my children. I am very grateful for the program and people like my Career Advisor. Thank you again!”
