Beaumont — A new traffic plan aimed at alleviating congestion at Harmony Elementary School is receiving early praise from parents and staff. For the first time this school year, drivers lined up in the parking lot of the former Market Basket instead of the streets surrounding Harmony Science Academy Elementary, utilizing a new system designed to reduce traffic.
“I think it was positive because our cars were not on the street, which was what we were trying to avoid. And we did that. And I think each day it’s going to just get faster,” said Principal Melissa Vines of Harmony Science Academy Elementary.
The new location accommodates over 200 cars, providing ample space for parents to wait at the end of the school day. Parents receive place cards with a number and their child’s grade level to notify staff of their arrival for pickup. This change offers a safer alternative for parents who prefer to arrive early.
“I like the comfort here. The other location you’re on the main street so you have to worry about cars passing by. I used to keep my seatbelt on,” said Keritza Rivera a parent.
Principal Vines emphasized the importance of finding solutions to improve the school pickup process. A parent waiting in line, Cameron Tyler expressed appreciation for the efforts made by Principal Vines.
“I think she’s doing a good job so far. I mean, last year my girl started here at school and so I was on the road all every day and then now here it gets a little more safe comfort you know,” Tyler said.
Principal Vines plans to continue working on improvements to alleviate traffic, noting that Thursday was just the beginning. She thanked parents for their patience and support with the new plan.
