MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — It was an exciting day at Tropical Park on Sunday as the world premiere of a new musical celebrating what makes the 305 home took the stage.

“Me and My Miami” is Brevo Theatre’s first original musical production. The company, rooted in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, has created a space for young artists to express themselves right here at home — proving they don’t have to leave South Florida to pursue their theatrical dreams.

This live, rambunctious, and vibrant musical is set in Miami, telling the city’s story through music, culture, and spoken word.

“I wanted to write something that the community youth would have their voice and that Miami would appreciate,” said writer, director, and choreographer Patdro Harris. “No matter where you’re from — Little Haiti to Brickell — you would have something you’d enjoy.”

Harris says the storyline centers on three families from different cultural backgrounds who win a spoken word contest — but conflict arises when long-held family secrets begin to surface.

“They all want the same thing, and when they get to their festival, they start saying those secrets their family did not want them to say,” Harris explained.

The founders of Brevo Theatre were intentional about featuring young, local talent alongside seasoned artists well known in South Florida’s performing arts community.

“The leads in this show are somewhere between the ages of 12 and 16,” said T.M. Pride, producing artistic director for Brevo Theatre. “They have more lines than everybody else. And that’s what’s important to us — to train up the next generation.”

That next generation includes one young performer mentored through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program — with Local 10 anchor Calvin Hughes in the audience to show his support.

“You see the different cultures,” Harris said. “Sometimes in Miami we take one culture versus another, but here we’ve got all cultures represented. So when you come here, please see yourself — because you are ‘Me and My Miami.’”

The creator says the show will make audiences both laugh and cry — and that it’s a performance for everyone.

“Me and My Miami” runs through Oct. 12 at Tropical Park.
