New Jersey’s high schools rank third best in the nation, according to new data released by U.S. News and World Report this week.
Nationwide, 18,000 publicly funded high schools were ranked. Schools with less than 15 students in the 12th grade were not included in the data.
The rankings were based on several factors, with participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses and the number of students achieving a three or better on either test accounting for 40% of a school’s score.
Graduation rates and state test scores account for 30% of U.S. News’ system. The rankings also measure a school’s ability to support the learning of low-income, Black and Latino students, which accounts for the final 10% of a school’s score.
All of the data used to create this year’s rankings is based on the 2022-2023 school year.
Massachusetts led the rankings with 43% of its schools ranked in the top quarter of U.S. high schools, followed by Connecticut with 41% and New Jersey with 40%.
Monmouth County’s High Technology High School in Lincroft ranked as both the top high school in New Jersey and the top STEM — or science, technology, engineering and math — school in the country in the new rankings.
Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro tops New Jersey’s own high school rankings which are based on how well a school performed based on test scores, academic growth and other factors.
U.S. News, which focuses more heavily on advanced placement courses, ranked the same Bergen County school seventh in the state.
New Jersey’s top ten high schools in the U.S. News ranking are all magnet and specialized high schools that admit high-achieving students. Millburn High School, ranked 11th in New Jersey, was the highest-ranked school open to all local students.
