The Museum of Tibetan Art & Culture held its grand opening at the Legacy Arts Santa Barbara on November 21, 2025.
The opening ceremony was spearheaded by Lama Tashi Norbu, a U.S.-based Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader and the ceremony’s founder.
The event was attended by “several hundred people” and some local artists, Lama Norbu shared in an Instagram post on November 23, 2025. The museum also sold some art pieces, he added.
“The local people of Santa Barbara were so welcoming and so ready to listen to Buddhist teachings,” Lama Norbu wrote on Instagram.
The event aimed to explore and understand Tibetan art and culture.
Lama Norbu has been touring the world for the past 20 years and will continue to do so, but plans to be more available in Santa Barbara, he wrote. He said he will invite some more Tibetan monks, lamas, and artists to experience the museum.
The Santa Barbara museum is part of La Cumbre Plaza’s Art Walk, according to Lama Norbu’s website. He will be available for Tibetan Sacred Tattoo sessions.
He will conduct yoga classes, meditation sessions, and traditional Buddhist rituals at the museum every Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., according to the website. These sessions will run through the end of this year.
The Museum and Legacy Art Team will be touring the U.S. in March, June, July, and August 2026, according to Lama Norbu. He added that he will attend Art Basel Miami from December 1 to 7, 2025.
He shared videos of himself hosting the opening ceremony, conducting a traditional Buddhist prayer ritual using singing bowls while chanting prayers and singing songs, with several young Buddhist monks present at the venue.

Lama Norbu is also the co-founder of the Museum of Contemporary Tibetan Art (MoCTA) in Emmen, the Netherlands. Founded in 2017, MoCTA aims to serve as a space to preserve and promote Tibetan art and culture by hosting exhibitions, workshops, and events.
In October 2022, MoCTA joined the circle of Dutch Museums in the Netherlands, meeting all the required high-quality standards and adhering to the International Code of Ethics for Museums.
A traditional Tibetan artist, Lama Norbu has studied in Buddhist monasteries and also in Europe. His art blends the fundamentals of his Tibetan Buddhism with influences of western art schools.
