Back-to-school costs climb
Families in the Twin Cities are expected to spend $682 per child on back-to-school shopping this year.
According to a new report from Deloitte, that is a $6 increase from last year.
The breakdown shows 33% of that goes toward clothing and accessories, 35% toward tech products, 25% toward school supplies and 7% toward home, health and other products.
Nationwide, the Consumer Price Index shows “stationery supplies,” which include items like pencils and notebooks, cost 3.4% more than last year.
However, it is a nearly 30% increase in the last four years.
According to the Deloitte report, 76% of families in the Twin Cities said they would shift brands this year if their preferred brand is too expensive.
Some retailers are also taking steps to help families save money amid inflation.
Target recently announced it would keep its 2024 prices on key back-to-school items, including its list of 20 must-have supplies.
The back-to-school sale at Target also begins Sunday.
