Meghan Trainor opens up about the health scare that pushed her toward Mounjaro and major lifestyle changes

Meghan Trainor’s latest chapter isn’t just about a new single, it’s about reclaiming control of her body, her health and the conversation around both. After months of online scrutiny over her appearance, the singer is now openly connecting the dots between a frightening pregnancy complication, a demanding career, and the steps she has taken to feel stronger than she has in years. Her interviews over the past week paint a picture that’s far more layered than the internet’s reactions: a woman responding to a health scare, lifting toddlers, touring, training, and trying to tune out the noise.

Health wake-up call and the beginning of real change

In a conversation with Kayla Thomas on iHeartRadio’s KIISFM, Trainor said the push toward serious lifestyle changes began after developing gestational diabetes during her first pregnancy. “I’m getting a lot of hate online just posting who I am, and everyone’s like ‘Why are you thin now? You were ‘All About That Bass’ girl.’ And I was like 19 when I came out with that and I’ve been in a fitness journey since I got healthy, and it started when I was pregnant and I had gestational diabetes.”Gestational diabetes, as defined by Medline Plus, occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin during pregnancy, causing high blood sugar. For Trainor, it was the turning point. She told KIISFM she needed to be strong enough to tour and to care for her children without injuring herself, “to lift them out of their cribs without pulling [my] back.”That commitment spiraled into a full overhaul. “Now I’m strength training three times a week in the gym and I am so focused on health and now I’m obsessed with my hormones, my gut,” she said. “I just want to feel good because this job is hard if you don’t feel good. But I got a lot of hate for being thin so it confused me and rattled me.”Trainor shares two sons, Riley, born in 2021, and Barry Bruce, born in 2023, with husband Daryl Sabara. After Barry’s birth, fans noticed her appearance changing rapidly, and by early 2025, her weight loss was impossible to ignore. She later acknowledged that her wellness plan included using Mounjaro, along with strength training, nutrition changes and, eventually, a breast augmentation and lift. Red carpets and performances, including Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday celebration, showcased the confidence she’d regained.

Responding to backlash, and channeling it into music

But as her body changed, so did the online commentary. Last week, Trainor told Entertainment Tonight that her critics had escalated. “I’m literally for the first time ever, after having babies, taking care of my health to the highest level and I’ve never felt better and I look incredible,” she said. “I feel great and that’s when people attack me,” she continued, adding that the criticism is “getting louder” and “meaner.” She reiterated, “I’m taking care of myself. I have to find a way to not be affected by that.”That tension, between taking care of herself and being judged for it — became the heart of her new song, “Still Don’t Care.” In the opening lines, she sings:“You could say what you want, say I’m so hard to likeYou could tear me apart, but I sleep well at night (Woo)Say I’m doin’ too much, and you’re probably rightThat’s the same s–t I’ve heard my whole lifeSaid I was too thick, then I got way too thinAnd I try to stand out, but I wanna fit in.”It’s an answer to her critics, but also a declaration, that after gestational diabetes, Mounjaro, motherhood, strength training and rebuilding her identity, the only person who ultimately decides what “healthy” looks like for Meghan Trainor is Meghan Trainor.Note: The information provided in this article is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice.
