The Duchess of Sussex’ lavish outfit for a recent charity event has raised eyebrows, with experts claiming the move could alienate her from her everyday fans.
Meghan recently attended Kevin Costner’s One805LIVE! charity concert – her first public appearance with Prince Harry in months – in a navy dress accesorised with some eye-wateringly expensive jewellery.
The jewellery she wore, which included Princess Diana’s Cartier Tank Francaise watch, some designer tennis bracelets, totalled a reported worth of approximately US$36,000 ($54,000).
That’s not including Meghan’s engagement ring from Prince Harry which is said to be worth $100,000.
“Meghan may desire to connect with everyday people, but if so, she has to be fully committed. Wearing that kind of expensive jewellery communicates, ‘I am in the upper class,'” Ryan McCormick, Managing Partner at Goldman McCormick PR told the Daily Mail UK.
“So we have two conflicting messages here, and that’s one of the reasons why it could be challenging for some members of the public to emotionally connect with her.”

With the selection of jewellery worth “multiple times the average salary of most people”, McCormick posited that the decision “makes it harder for the Duchess to be perceived of ‘one of us’.”
Meghan is known to enjoy a lavish lifestyle as she shares insights on her Instagram and on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan.
She often wears expensive designer clothing on the set of the series and enjoys a number of luxury homewares.
The duchess recently shared a video to her Instagram stories showing off a new engraved vase that she may add to the collection of her lifestyle brand As Ever.
In the background her dog Mia can be seen laying on an arm chair against an Hermès throw which retails for $2885 in Australia.
It’s this kind of luxury that some say leaves her disconnected from the everyday fan that she is engaging through her lifestyle brand, social media and TV show.
However, Meghan has spoken in the past against accusations that her lifestyle may appear as unrelatable.
“Don’t they know my life hasn’t always been like this,” she said during an interview with the New York Times back in April.
Writing about the interview, the journalist Julia Moskin observed that Meghan was “clearly bothered by accusations that she is unrelatable and out of touch”.
