The Medical College of Wisconsin is moving forward with plans to build on-campus housing for the first time at its Wauwatosa campus.
The proposed complex, known as The Commons at MCW, would be built on a college-owned parking lot along West Watertown Plank Road, just north of an existing MCW parking structure. The four-story development is expected to include about 260 units and would sit above two underground parking levels with a combined 352 stalls.
MCW currently relies on outside housing options for its 1,700 students, with its website pointing students to outside resources. The Commons would represent the college’s first step into operating its own residential facilities.
Fox Point–based General Capital Group is partnering with MCW as the project developer, with AG Architecture leading the design and The Sigma Group handling civil engineering.
Preliminary plans submitted to Wauwatosa’s Design Review Board show a mix of studio, junior one-bedroom, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. Amenities outlined in the proposal include study and conference areas, a fitness room, a lounge, a rooftop terrace, bike storage and an outdoor social area complete with seating and cornhole.
The city’s Design Review Board is scheduled to review the project on Dec. 18.
At the same meeting, the board will review two other multifamily housing proposals, including 462 apartment units as part of the first phase of redevelopment at the south end of Mayfair Mall and a 92-unit apartment building at 2400 N. Mayfair Road.
Meanwhile, plans are advancing to convert the Sonesta Milwaukee West Wauwatosa hotel into 146 apartments, and the city is revising the master plan for the Milwaukee County Research Park to allow for infill housing development.
