School closures in Kentucky: When JCPS decides to close due to weather
With help from the National Weather Service and school facilities, learn how JCPS handles student safety during adverse weather.
Jefferson County Public Schools and other districts around the Louisville area closed classrooms Dec. 2 after snow fell in the region overnight.
JCPS announced a nontraditional instruction, or NTI, day Dec. 2. The National Weather Service in Louisville reported 2-3 inches of snowfall around the metro area.
The University of Louisville closed its facilities Dec. 2. Classes will gather remotely.
Here are the districts we are tracking after the latest round of snow in the Louisville area.
Officials with JCPS announced an NTI day for students Dec. 2. All after-school athletic and extracurricular activities for Dec. 2 are canceled.
“On short-term NTI days, instruction is asynchronous and self-paced, meaning students will not receive live, online lessons from a teacher,” JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said in a statement. “Families received school-specific NTI plans last week.”
JCPS, which is using its first NTI day Dec. 2, is allowed to use up to 10 NTI days during the school year, Callahan said. NTI days count as regular school days and do not need to be made up later in the school year
Officials with the Archdiocese of Louisville announced schools are closed Dec. 2.
Officials with Oldham County Schools announced schools are closed Dec. 2. Students will have an NTI day. Enrichment Centers are also closed.
District officials said in a statement Dec. 1 that NTI days will be used in additional to traditional snow days during the 2025-26 winter season. The district is allowed to use up to 10 NTI days during the school year. NTI days count as regular school days and do not need to be made up later in the school year.
Officials with Bullitt County Public Schools announced students will have an NTI day Dec. 2.
“Students will complete their learning from home, and teachers will provide assignments and support throughout the day,” district officials said in a statement. “We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate the winter weather season. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s school.”
Officials with Greater Clark County Schools announced schools will have a Synchronous eLearning day Dec. 2. Teachers will deliver live instruction through Google Meet. Attendance is required.
Clarksville Community Schools are on a remote learning schedule Dec. 2, district officials said in a statement.
Officials with the New Albany Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation announced schools will have a Synchronous eLearning day Dec. 2.
“During Synchronous eLearning, students will participate in live instruction provided by their teachers in accordance with Indiana State Guidelines and NAFCS guidance,” district officials said in a statement.
Officials with Shelby County Public Schools announced schools will have an NTI day Dec. 2.
“Your student’s school will provide further direction on today’s NTI instruction,” district officials said in a statement.
Officials with Spencer County Schools announced schools are closed Dec. 2. It is a traditional snow day for students.
Yes, Fort Knox Community Schools are closed Dec. 2, officials with the military installation announced.
The University of Louisville closed its facilities Dec. 2, UofL spokesperson Chris Wooton said in a statement. Classes will gather remotely.
Officials with the University of Kentucky announced its facilities are operating on a normal schedule Dec. 2.
“Our crews have been working to check and treat roads and sidewalks on and around campus,” officials said in a statement.
Bellarmine University officials announced campus is closed Dec. 2. In-person classes are canceled, while online classes will continue as planned.
Spalding University officials announced Dec. 2 is a virtual work and learning day. The SU Cafe will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
