Lifestyle changes improve lung cancer treatment outcomes

Lung cancer patients can significantly improve their treatment outcomes by adopting lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, maintaining a nutritious diet, and engaging in regular exercise. These modifications, alongside medical treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, can enhance recovery, reduce complications, and boost long-term survival rates.

Importance of Quitting Smoking

Dr Nithin SG, Consultant in Medical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, stresses that quitting smoking is crucial for lung cancer patients. “Smoking induces systemic inflammation, weakens the immune system, and increases chemotherapy’s toxicity, leading to complications like mucositis and respiratory infections,” he explains.

Smoking cessation is not just about preventing further damage. It also reduces the risk of cancer recurrence and the development of secondary cancers. “Stopping smoking directly improves treatment success and long-term survival rates,” adds Dr SG, emphasising its vital role in enhancing the overall effectiveness of cancer therapies.

Role of a Nutritious Diet

Nutrition plays an equally important role in the treatment of lung cancer. A well-balanced diet that includes green leafy vegetables, fruits, and essential micronutrients can significantly improve a patient’s immunity.

“Diets rich in these nutrients help replenish deficiencies commonly seen in cancer patients,” Dr SG says. He explains that such foods not only manage the side effects of treatments but also strengthen the body’s natural defence mechanisms, making it better equipped to fight the disease.

Exercise for Improved Surgical Outcomes

Exercise is another key factor in improving the health outcomes of lung cancer patients, particularly those undergoing surgery or radiotherapy. “Poor cardiopulmonary health can negatively affect surgical outcomes,” says Dr SG.

Patients suffering from chronic airway diseases or obesity face higher risks during lung cancer surgeries, including perioperative morbidity and mortality. Regular physical activity improves cardiopulmonary function, thus lowering these risks.

“Exercise helps reduce complications, enhances post-operative recovery, and leads to better long-term outcomes,” he notes, highlighting how crucial regular physical activity is for patients.

Comprehensive Approach to Cancer Treatment

The combination of quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a physically active lifestyle creates a holistic approach to lung cancer care. These lifestyle modifications, while seemingly simple, significantly enhance the effectiveness of medical treatments and improve the patient’s quality of life.

For lung cancer patients, embracing these changes is not only about adding more years to life but also about improving the quality of life during and after cancer treatment.
