CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Just in time for Father’s Day, men looking to boost their testosterone levels might consider some lifestyle changes beyond traditional injections.
Katie Vincent, a nurse practitioner specializing in hormone therapy and longevity medicine at Ohio’s Advanced Vitality, emphasized the importance of exercise and diet in maintaining healthy testosterone levels.
“Testosterone is a hormone that is made in our bodies, it helps support things like our muscle mass, as well as important things like libido,” said Vincent.
While injections are a common method to increase testosterone, Vincent highlighted the critical role of weight training.
“Putting on more muscle mass is going to free up more of that testosterone to be used as well,” said Vincent.
Vincent also pointed out the impact of diet on hormone levels, noting that the typical American diet, high in processed foods, may not provide the necessary nutrients for testosterone production.
“People just aren’t getting enough of what they need to create enough testosterone in their bodies,” said Vincent.
She recommended incorporating more fresh foods and lean proteins, such as salmon, into the diet.
“Having enough healthy fats in the diet will support the ability of your body to create those hormones and have those available,” Vincent said.
Foods like oysters, avocado, eggs, and olive oil, particularly as part of a Mediterranean-style diet, are suggested for their benefits in supporting testosterone and cholesterol levels.
“So, eating enough of those will partner with the cholesterol and make sure you are getting more of those hormones created by your body,” Vincent said.
