Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration of African American culture, family and community, observed annually from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. Created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga as part of the Afrocentric movement, it draws from ancient African harvest festivals to promote seven principles called Nguzo Saba, including unity, self-deter

Origins

Kwanzaa originated in Los Angeles as a nonreligious, secular holiday to foster African heritage and pride during a time of civil rights struggles. Karenga, a professor of Africana studies, designed it with Swahili names and symbols inspired by traditions across Africa, blending them into a modern framework for African Americans. [2]

Participation

Estimates suggest millions of African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa in the U.S., though exact figures vary due to its cultural rather than census-tracked nature.

Globally, it’s observed in the African diaspora, including Caribbean nations, but primarily remains a U.S.-focused holiday with smaller followings elsewhere. No state leads definitively in followers, but California, with its large African American population and Karenga’s Los Angeles roots, likely has the highest observance. Nevada sees modest participation tied to Las Vegas’ diverse communities. [1]

Key traditions

Each night features lighting a candle called mishumaa saba on a kinara holder, reflecting one principle, with discussions and libations from a unity cup called kikombe cha umoja. Symbolic items include a mat (mkeka), crops (mazao) like yams, okra and corn (muhindi) for children. The Karamu feast on the sixth night (Dec. 31) highlights communal meals with one-pot stews such as gumbo, jollof rice and peanut stew, plus soul food like collards, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese and plantains. [3, 4]

Many celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa, as the holidays overlap without conflict — Kwanzaa affirms cultural values alongside Christmas’ religious ones. [1]

The seven principles

Kwanzaa centers on the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles, each honored on one day of the celebration. These Swahili-named principles guide reflection, discussion and action to strengthen African American family and community bonds. [5, 6]

  • Umoja (Unity): Strive for and maintain unity in family, community, nation and race. [7]
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves. [5]
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): Build and maintain community together, solving problems collectively. [8]
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): Build and support businesses together for mutual prosperity. [8]
  • Nia (Purpose): Make collective vocation the building and development of community. [9]
  • Kuumba (Creativity): Cultivate and use individual talents to make community more beautiful and beneficial. [7]
  • Imani (Faith): Believe in people, parents, teachers, leaders and the righteousness of the struggle. [5]

Each evening, families light a candle on the kinara to symbolize the day’s principle, pouring libations and sharing related activities. [10]

The Karamu feast

The Kwanzaa Karamu feast, held on the sixth night (Dec. 31), features communal dishes inspired by African, Caribbean and Southern African American traditions, emphasizing harvest staples like vegetables, grains and stews. Menus vary by family but focus on one-pot meals, soul food classics and shared plates to symbolize unity and abundance. [11]

Typical menu items

Common Karamu offerings include:

  • Staples and sides: Collard greens (often simmered with ham hocks), black-eyed peas, candied yams, cornbread, fried okra and plantains. [12]
  • Mains: Gumbo with sausage, shrimp and chicken; jollof rice (spiced West African rice with meat or veggies); jerk chicken or fried catfish. [13]
  • Desserts: Sweet potato pie, peach cobbler or bread pudding. [11]
    Sample recipes
  • Jollof rice: Sauté onions, garlic, ginger and tomato paste; add rice, broth, thyme, curry and bay leaves; simmer covered for 30 minutes, then top with butter and veggies. [11]
  • Gumbo: Make a roux with oil and flour, add sausage, “holy trinity” (onion, celery, bell pepper), garlic, broth and chicken; simmer one to two hours. [11]
  • Candied yams: Boil sliced yams with butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger until caramelized. [12]

These dishes highlight creativity (Kuumba) and cooperative economics through home-cooked, shareable feasts. [14]
