We all want our homes to look luxe and reflect our personalities, but sometimes these two things don’t quite fit into our budget. If you’re smart about it, however, you can achieve a more personalised look for much less by thinking outside the box.
Alex Lawson told Yahoo Lifestyle she was “bored” with her grey bed, but it wasn’t until a glass of water spilled on it that gave her and her partner the push they needed to “do something about it”. Originally from Scotland, now living in Brisbane, Alex explained that she wanted to find something to cover the old fabric.
She was surprised when she found exactly what she wanted at Kmart.
“I was looking for different fabrics to use, but many of the options were really costly,” the 30-year-old explained.
“I just happened to be shopping in Kmart for some other home supplies when I spotted their Christmas range tablecloth.
“I couldn’t believe how reasonable it was, and it felt like fate as I’d been most keen on using a striped fabric.”

The $17 tablecloth features red and pink stripes and doesn’t scream ‘Christmas’ by any means, measuring 325cm long and 150cm wide.
“I used a staple gun, scissors, wadding, and my tablecloths,” she said, adding she used two tablecloths for the project to cover up the stained grey fabric.
Alex said that it’s a “great beginner DIY project” and offered some advice for anyone hoping to try it out themselves.
“I’d absolutely recommend giving it a go. If you are using a patterned fabric, be mindful of where the pattern between sections matches up, like around corners, for example,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“Be patient and remember if you make a mistake, it is very easy to undo the staples and try again.
“This is a fantastic way to give a bed frame a new lease of life.”
Alex also said that she believes the “biggest hurdle” to completing projects like this one is “just starting”.
“Once you start you will be amazed at what you are able to achieve,” she said.
Having such a bright bed meant Alex had to choose more subtle sheets to ensure the patterns and colours didn’t clash, but she added: “I think the bright white [sheets] really make the colourful bed pop even more.”
Alex’s followers loved the idea, with many saying they were “obsessed” and that it “looks so good”.
“Phenomenal glow up,” one person wrote.
“What a transformation, can’t believe you got all that fabric for $34,” another added.

Alex also inspired others who weren’t keen on their beds, but didn’t want to spend the money on a new one.
“Will definitely be giving this a go!” wrote one woman.
Some, however, said that their sheets were “too colourful and patterned” to pull off the striped look.
But that doesn’t mean another tablecloth won’t catch your eye next time you’re out shopping.
