COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Juneteenth Jubilee Day Festival was held at the Ohio History Center Thursday, an event featuring performances, reenactments, food demonstrations and more.
Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, marks June 19, 1865. It’s the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The day is widely regarded as the symbolic end of slavery in the United States and has become a celebration of Black resilience, culture and progress.
