Jorge Martin: ‘This season will not define my career’

Jorge Martin says he never felt sorry for himself during his very difficult 2025 MotoGP season. Even though he was injured many times, he chose to understand what went wrong and think about the future.

The Spanish rider moved from Pramac Ducati to Aprilia at the start of the year. It was a big move, but sadly the season quickly became a nightmare. Martin suffered four serious injuries and finished the year 21st in the championship.

His problems started before the first race. On the first day of winter testing, Martin crashed and got injured. Soon after, he was hurt again while training. Because of this, he missed the first three races and only made his Aprilia race debut in Qatar, the fourth round of the season.

Things got even worse there. Martin crashed again and broke 11 ribs, which kept him out of racing for a long time. He missed eight races and spent many weeks recovering at home and in hospital.

Martin finally returned in Brno, where he slowly started to find his speed again. But just when things looked better, another crash happened. At the start of the Motegi sprint race, he made a mistake and was injured once more, sending him back to hospital.

Away from the track, there was also trouble. Martin tried to leave his Aprilia contract early to join the factory Honda team, but the move did not happen. This added more stress to an already painful season.

Speaking to the media during the Valencia MotoGP test, Martin explained that he never allowed himself to fall into a negative mindset. “There was no point thinking, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ What happened, happened. The important thing is to learn from it,” Martin said.

Martin said he focused on understanding why the crashes happened, so he can stop them from happening again in the future. He does not want to think too much about the past. Instead, he wants to look ahead and prepare for next season.

This is why he went to the Valencia test, even though he was not fully fit. He wanted to help Aprilia by working on bike settings and getting ready for 2026.

Martin arrived at Aprilia as the reigning MotoGP world champion, after beating Francesco Bagnaia in a close fight in 2024. At the start of 2025, Aprilia struggled, but new bike updates later in the season made the RS-GP much faster. Other Aprilia riders even won races.

Sadly, Martin could not really benefit from this improvement. Because of his injuries, he only started seven races. His best result was fourth place in Hungary.

When asked what he learned most from the season, he gave an honest answer. He said he sometimes pushed too hard when he did not yet fully understand the bike. “I was trying to do more than I needed to do, and that’s why I crashed,” he explained.

In Valencia, Martin did not win and did not finish in the top 10. But he felt happy because he rode in a smart and calm way. Martin believes this is the correct approach for the future. “You cannot change the past. You can only focus on going forward,” he said.

He admitted that 2025 was one of the hardest seasons of his career, but he is confident it will not define him as a rider. “Sometimes there is a bump in the road, but it doesn’t define your career. I know I can come back to my full level.”

With a fast bike and a fresh start, Jorge Martin believes he and Aprilia can be very competitive again in the future.
