The Embassy of Italy in Singapore, in collaboration with the Italian Women’s Group of Singapore, organised a seminar on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the United Nations in 2015 and celebrated every year on 11 February. The aim is to promote the full and equal participation of women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, reducing the gender gap that still persists in these fields. established by the United Nations. The event, hosted by the Italian Embassy in Singapore and moderated by Nicola Bianchi scientific attaché and opened by Ambassador Dante Brandi, celebrated the fundamental role of women in science and technology, highlighting their contribution to research and innovation.

During the seminar, three outstanding young female researchers, internationally recognised for their work, spoke. Giulia Adriani is an expert in immunology and cancer therapies, and her work has contributed to the development of new strategies in the fight against cancer.

Serenella Tolomeo is a neuroscientist specialising in the study of behavioural disorders, with a focus on the neurobiological bases that determine them. Her research focuses on analysing the brain mechanisms involved in various pathologies, with the aim of identifying new strategies for understanding, diagnosing and treating these conditions.

Sandra Zhong is a scientist specialising in personalised medicine, with a focus on innovative technologies to improve medical care. She collaborates with Italian institutes to develop advanced therapies and integrate digital solutions in healthcare, fostering innovation and international scientific exchange.

The seminar highlighted not only the individual achievements of these researchers, but also the importance of scientific cooperation between Italy and Singapore, a pillar of bilateral relations between the two countries. The collaboration extends to key areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, foodtech, cancer therapies and photonics,
The event was also an opportunity to reaffirm Italy’s commitment to promoting gender equality in research. With a growing number of women in academic and industrial leadership roles, the contribution of Italian women scientists is increasingly crucial at a global level. Initiatives such as the Science She Says Award, instituted by the Science and Life Association, which rewards women who distinguish themselves in the field of science, promoting female visibility and gender equality in STEM disciplines, as well as the Day of Italian Research in the World, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to celebrate the contribution of Italian researchers abroad and to strengthen international scientific collaboration, aim to stimulate interest in science and to support equal opportunities and global innovation. They testify to the desire to enhance female excellence in STEM disciplines.

Special thanks were extended to the IWG Italian Women’s Group Singapore, which continues to support and enhance the role of women in society and the world of work. The IWG Italian Women’s Group Singapore is an association that brings together Italian women in Singapore, with the aim of creating a support network and fostering the integration of Italian women in the local community. The association organises social, cultural and professional events, promoting solidarity among members and cultural exchange between Italy and Singapore. In addition, the IWG supports charitable initiatives and volunteer projects, contributing to the betterment of local society. With a focus on enhancing the role of women, the association also encourages the development of professional and business opportunities for Italian women in Singapore.

On the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Singapore, the event was a moment of reflection and celebration for the long journey of cooperation and friendship between the two countries. Since 1965, when Singapore gained independence, Italy and Singapore have developed increasingly strong ties in the economic, cultural, scientific and political spheres. This anniversary underlines the importance of continuing along this path, consolidating the strategic partnership and strengthening cooperation in crucial areas such as scientific research, technological innovation and sustainability.

The 60th anniversary is not only an occasion to celebrate past successes, but also to look to the future, promoting new joint projects that aim to respond to global challenges. the seminar was a significant moment to consolidate cooperation between the two countries and to inspire new generations of female researchers to pursue scientific careers, thus contributing to the advancement of knowledge and global innovation.
