Investing in Himself: UMO Student James Boring Balances Career, Family, and Education with Purpose

Princeton, N.C. — When James Boring enrolled at the University of Mount Olive (UMO) in 2023, he brought more than ambition—he arrived with a clear vision of success rooted in perseverance, family, and community.

Currently serving as a Mortgage Loan Officer and Assistant Vice President at KS Bank, Boring is no stranger to the challenges of balancing a demanding career with family responsibilities. As a husband and father of three, he’s equally dedicated to his role at home. Now, he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting through UMO’s online program, aiming to graduate in 2026.

Raised in Princeton and born in nearby Clayton, Boring’s small-town values drive his commitment to both his family and professional growth. His decision to return to school came after carefully reflecting on his career path and his desire to provide a solid example for his children. “I want to show my kids the benefits of chasing your dreams and sticking to it,” he says.

Boring’s journey has been shaped by hard decisions, including a period attending NC State during his son’s early years before shifting focus to the banking industry. Over the years, he has climbed into a leadership role by proving himself reliable and hardworking—a testament to lessons taught by his late mother, Linda, who emphasized respect and lifelong learning.

His wife Marrissa plays a central role in supporting his educational pursuits. Together, they raise three children—Magnolia (11 months), Jeddah (14), and Anthem (10)—and enjoy family activities such as 5K runs, long walks, and game nights.

The connection between his coursework and daily work is evident. Boring notes that his accounting classes have enhanced his understanding of complex financial reports and prepared him for upcoming topics like business tax returns. Yet for him, the most rewarding aspect of his job remains helping clients navigate the mortgage process with confidence.

Boring also praises UMO’s online program for its responsive faculty and accelerated courses. “Repetition and consistent work habits are necessary to succeed,” he explains. “You must roll up your sleeves, read the material, and ask your professors questions. Nobody else will do it for you—and that applies to life, too.”

Faculty such as Dr. Doug Ward and Dr. Alan Lamm have made a lasting impression on Boring, who credits their engaging teaching styles with making challenging subjects enjoyable.

Beyond work and school, Boring is an active community leader. He has served as an ambassador with the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, mentors youth through the Inspire Mentoring Program, coaches soccer and basketball, and volunteers with the PTA at East Clayton Elementary.

Looking ahead, Boring plans to further his banking career and leverage his accounting degree to pursue greater financial expertise and leadership opportunities, including potentially earning his CPA certification.

For James Boring, success is defined by a simple formula: perseverance, purpose, and people. His story is one of dedication—not only to personal achievement but also to uplifting others along the way.
