Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology aims to be a unique platform for research on human-environment interactions in the past. As well as covering areas that traditionally have gained a lot of attention, we aim to be an inclusive journal, encouraging and promoting work that is often absent from environmental archaeology discourse. Beyond our mission statement, you can see in our Field Chief Editor, Prof. Tim Denham’s, Grand Challenge article that our vision for the journal is to be inclusive, especially in regards to voices from the Global South and from Indigenous communities.

With our journal’s mission and vision in mind, we are launching this inaugural Research Topic, promoting Indigenous perspectives and voices within environmental archaeology sphere.

The scope of the collection is broad, with the aim of engaging an array of voices on a global scale, and across different aspects of the field. We would be keen to see submissions on topics such as the following:

• Indigenous perspectives on archaeological findings and practice
• Indigenous scholars publishing research within the field of environmental archaeology
• Reflections by Indigenous communities on working with environmental archaeologists in the past or present, and their hopes for the future
• Ethical issues when conducting environmental archaeology with Indigenous communities – looking towards best practice

The above list is not exhaustive and if you have a topic that may be of interest then please feel free to contact the editorial team for this Research Topic.

To support our visions of inclusivity further, we are seeking to subsidize a significant portion of the contributions to this volume. If you need financial support to enable publication in this Special Topic, please submit your manuscript summary (abstract) to the collection for consideration, and send an email to the journal at ‘environmentalarchaeology@frontiersin.org’. Preference will be given to submissions led by Indigenous communities and scholars.

Please also see details below on Frontiers-wide support that is available.

Publishing Fee Support Information:

Frontiers has a fee support program in place. Authors and institutions with insufficient funding will be eligible for discounts to their Article Processing Charges (APCs). Anyone can apply to the fee support program using our fee support application form. Please note, your request for a fee support will in no way influence whether your submission is accepted or rejected for publication.

Please also note that Frontiers currently have eight national consortia agreements and partnerships with more than 650 institutions across the world who support the Frontiers editorial program. Check if your institution has a payment plan with us.
